Free Camping at Giant Rock BLM
Summary of transcription content from: LivingOurDreamNow
Melody and I take you to the free Giant Rock BLM campground, located about 20 miles north of Yucca Valley, home to Joshua Tree National Park. It is a dispersed camping area, accessible via paved California Highway 247. It's a free 100% campsite with plenty of space, campfire rings, and wonderful views of Giant Rock. There are other dispersed campsites in the area with hiking and off-roading opportunities. There are also nearby services such as a gas station and a general store.
There are dips in the access road which could pose a problem for large vehicles such as caravans. It is recommended to have an all-terrain vehicle and to avoid bringing a caravan or long trailer. There are also areas of soft sand on the road, so caution is advised. However, there is good cell coverage in the area. GPS coordinates are available for those wishing to visit this free campsite. Enjoy nature and subscribe for more travel videos.

Alright my friends, Melody and I are taking you to the free wilderness camping area at Giant Rock BLM. It is a dispersed camping area located about 12 miles north of Yucca Valley, where Joshua Tree National Park is located. You arrive via a paved road, California Highway 247, and we are about a mile from the free camping area at this time. I'm going to turn on the dash cam and show you what this road looks like. Melody and I just arrived at the Giant Rock BLM wilderness camping area. It's completely free camping, which is really convenient. It's best not to have your on-board camera in slow motion, so I'm going to change plans and show you a little of the road on the way out, with a few comments. We passed a few campers on the way here, there was a large Class C RV, a Class B RV, and even a Jeep here. So there are people camping here. The Giant Rock, I believe, is right behind me. Melody is up there watching it and I parked my truck in a spot right behind me. You can see the fire pit there and my truck. For now, I'm going to take you up to Giant Rock to see what's up there, then I'll come back down to show you this campsite.
I have to say that it's really quiet here, and the campsite is quite remote. This rock right in the center of your screen is what they call the Giant Rock. Melody is over there talking to the people in this Type C camper, and we're going to go up there and see what it's like. We can see the road we took to arrive, it goes there, and it's not straight, we made a turn after this big pile of rocks. There are opportunities to go off-piste here, so you have paths leading from there. There's a little bit closer to Giant Rock, Melody is still over there talking to these people, but I'm going to move the camera to show you that there's definitely plenty of room for free camping in this wild camping area of the BLM, I doubt it will ever fill up. There are a few campfire rings, like the one over there near my truck, and it looks like there's a nice gap on the other side of the rock. Lets go see.
The Giant Rock is truly impressive. Melody is still out there talking to these people, but I want to take a tour to show you how big this BLM free camping space is. There are several spaces where you can level your camper, some nice spots right here. But it was definitely an interesting experience coming here and last time I looked there was cell service in the area, about nine miles from here, off Highway 247, there's a station -service, a dollar general and even a dump station at one of the gas stations. It's good to know.
Oh, I just noticed Melody was talking about graffiti on the hill over there. I don't know if you spotted them, but there are two painted eyes, it's pretty cool. You can climb all the way up there. It's impressive. We're going to go back down and I'll show you the other campsites, then I'll give you some pictures of the way back so you know what to expect. There are lots of cool things to discover in this BLM free wilderness camping area, you just need to come explore.
There are some bumps on this road, especially here in the center of the screen. This would concern me if I brought my caravan here. This Type C camper had great ground clearance, they weren't pulling anything behind them, but if you hit those jerks with a camper or travel trailer it could be a problem. But if you have a Type B camper with good ground clearance, or a small camping outfit where you don't have to worry about these shakes, then I recommend you come here. Personally, I would not take my caravan here because of this shaking. Another reason is that there are areas of soft sand on this road, which could be a problem if you don't have four-wheel drive. So if you have four-wheel drive, it's not a problem. One of the benefits is that I had cellular network on all three carriers here, believe it or not. I'll put the download and upload speeds for Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile in the video description on YouTube, along with the GPS coordinates for this free campsite. As always, if you like these videos, please like and subscribe, and I'll see you on the road.
I hadn't noticed this while walking towards Giant Rock, but there is another concrete slab with rocks stacked on it. I wonder what that was there. Yes, it's a concrete slab, with a fireplace in the center. It's pretty cool. Can you repeat what you just said? Is it 29 Palms? Ah, I think 29 Palms is some kind of military base, maybe a Marine base, and we hear explosion noises in the background, maybe it's coming from the military base. There are a lot of offroad trails here, Melody sees people all the way up on these rocks, they just disappeared behind the rocks, but she was waving at them. Okay, back to my truck and that fire pit that I showed you at the beginning of the video, there's another fire pit hidden behind those rocks, nice looking rocks, especially up there, it's cool. There are plenty of treasures that the Bureau of Land Management has to offer, completely free, just come explore.
I'll give you some pictures of the drive home so you know what to expect. These ups and downs, with those dips and bumps, could be a problem if you have a large caravan. This Type C camper had great ground clearance, but if you have a travel trailer this could be a problem. I also noticed some areas of soft sand on this road, so if you don't have four-wheel drive that might be another problem. One of the good things is that I had cellular network here with all the carriers. I will put the download and upload speeds in the video description on YouTube, along with the GPS coordinates for this free campsite. If you like these videos, like and subscribe, and I'll see you on the road.
I will give some additional information in French in case French speakers watch the video, but feel free to ask questions in the comments. Thank you all and we'll see you soon for new adventures!
