In our last video, we drove the Top of the World Highway and returned to the Yukon after an unforgettable two and a half months in Alaska. While we are still sad to have left Alaska, we are very excited to be back in the Yukon. We love the Yukon, and we can't wait to discover new places. First up, we are in the historic and charming town of Dawson City.
Dawson City
Located on the Yukon River near the Alaskan border, the city offers a mix of First Nations and gold rush history. The city's history dates back to the discovery of gold in 1896, which sparked the Klondike Gold Rush. By 1898, Dawson City had a population of over 30,000 and was nicknamed the "Paris of the North." The city was one of the largest in Western Canada. Today, the Klondike Gold Rush continues to play a major role in North American history.
City tour
A guided city tour with Parks Canada is a great way to learn about Dawson City’s history. We visited restored gold rush buildings like the bank, saloon and post office. These tours gave us a better understanding of what life was like for miners during the gold rush.
Sour Toe Cocktail
The city is also known for the “deaf toe cocktail,” a shot of whiskey with a dehydrated toe inside. While we didn’t partake in this tradition, it’s an iconic Dawson City experience.
Visit the dredge
We also visited the largest wooden dredge in North America, which was used to mine gold from rivers. It was a fascinating experience to better understand the gold mining process during the gold rush.
Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall
We also visited Canada's oldest casino, which features cancan shows and games. It was a fun and entertaining night out in Dawson City.
Bonton and Company
We ended our visit to Dawson City by enjoying local food and drinks at Bonton and Company Cafe and Restaurant. It was the perfect end to our stay in this historic city.
