Ideal location for free camping near Glacier National Park
If you're looking for a place to camp for free near Glacier National Park, you might want to take a look at McInnes Creek Road. To get there, take the North Fork Road which runs along the North Fork of the Flathead River. It is 14 miles north of Columbia Falls and 20 miles from the west entrance to Glacier Park. The road is mostly paved, but there is a mile of dirt road before turning onto McInnes Creek Road.
Tips for your stay
Before looking for a campsite, be sure to pass the private property sign. The road has a fairly steep incline and is winding all the way to the top. Most sites are simply parking areas, but there are a few real sites accessible via small side roads. Consider exploring in advance as some of these small roads are difficult to maneuver, especially if they are busy.
Camping Experience
About 1.6 miles from the entrance, our site, one of the first to accommodate RVs, had wonderful views of the valley below, given that you are camping on the side of the mountain. Don't go beyond five miles where there is a large camp or turnaround area if you have a large RV. After this point, the road becomes even narrower and steeper.
Activities nearby
The main draw of this route is the popular Standard Peak hike, about six miles from the entrance. There are also river access points to the north and south along the North Fork Road, as well as several viewpoints to take a break by the water. Also enjoy the stunning wild berries and the cold but refreshing river.
Other useful information
The best thing about McInnes Creek is its proximity to Glacier National Park. For fresh water supply and waste water draining for RVs, we recommend the Conoco gas station in Columbia Falls. For another free campsite more suitable for large vehicles, there is a large open area on the North Fork Road just past the Glacier Rim access point.
