This morning, Melody and I drive to Lower Sandy Campground, a free campground on Baker Lake in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, located on Washington State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway. We drive along a paved road to the campground, accessible even to large vehicles. Along the way, we discover an interpretive trail called “Shadow of the Sentinels.” Once at the campground, we explore the surrounding area with a beautiful view of Baker Lake. The campsites are numbered, some suitable for tents and small trailers, with incredible views of the lake. In addition to the campsite, we are also shown a free dispersed campsite near Lower Sandy Campground, offering an alternative in case the main campground is full. This campground offers a fire pit and ample space to camp.

Free Camping at Baker National Forest | Lower Sandy Campground

This morning, Melody and I are heading to Lower Sandy Campground. It’s a free campground located right on Baker Lake in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Let’s check this place out.

Running from Washington State Route 20 to Mount Baker Road, the trail is wide and paved so you won't have any trouble bringing a large RV here. The west side of Baker Lake is lined with campgrounds, some National Forest campgrounds. There is also a campground operated by a utility, they are budget friendly but this morning we are going to visit a free campground. It is 1.7 miles off the main road.

On the way to the campground, we came across this Shadow of the Sentinels interpretive trail in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. There's a big parking lot right off the Baker Lake road with restrooms and exhibits. It's called Shadow of the Sentinel, so let's go check it out. Look at the size of some of these trees, I mean, the moth on the trees, but look at this one, it's a huge tree and the sign says this Douglas fir is 680 years old. Pretty cool.

Well, this interpretive trail was pretty cool and my GPS shows us that we are 1.3 miles from the path to Lower Sandy Campground. Free! As we backed up and approached the campground, we came across this large campsite with a fire ring. So let's go and I'll show you this campsite as a bonus.

We arrived at Lower Sandy Campground, a free campground in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Look at that view! We just arrived and as soon as I get my bearings, I'll give you a walking tour.

Baker Lake is on my right, I drove up to the first campsite which looks to be number 5. Some of these campsites are for tents and it looks like number 5 is for a tent, but you can park your vehicle either here or there, and you have a big tent pad there, two picnic tables, a fire ring and another pad for a tent. If you're tent camping it's pretty nice here.

So how's that view behind me? Amazing, right? That's Baker Lake, and I'm going to give you a walking tour of Lower Sandy Campground, a free campground in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

We started exploring this free and affordable RV campground. You can put a small trailer here, I wouldn't bring my fifth wheel here, but there are a few sites that would accommodate a travel trailer. I'll show you them now.

Look at this view of Baker Lake from Campsite 7! It's amazing. Campsite 8 can accommodate the largest possible camping setup. Campsite 9 will be a tent campsite and Campsite 11 is also a tent campsite. Here is a free campsite behind me, a possible alternative if you can't find a spot at Lower Sandy.

There you have it, 100% of free camping in the Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.
