Explore Free Camping Across Colorado

Caitlin and Howard, the state's new nomads, have spent the last two years traveling all over North America in an RV, with trips to Alaska and Mexico in their Winnebago Navion. Over the past two months, they haven't paid to camp at all. In this episode, they'll show you exactly how, where, and why to camp for free throughout Colorado. Today we'll show you the free campsites we've stayed at across Colorado, all the way to our favorite in this beautiful state. Throughout our trip, we'll talk about the different types of free camping, as well as the websites, resources, and apps we use to find these free sites. We'll give you tips for finding a great place to camp and help you navigate the rules and regulations of free camping. You can use these same sites, apps and resources to find free campsites all over North America. Don't worry, we'll put a link below with all the GPS coordinates for each location we talk about today in this video. Plus, for even more recommendations, we'll walk you through how to access our map that shows every campsite we've stayed at since August 2018.

Black Campsite Gunnison Canyon

Black Canyon of the Gunnison Campground is on Bureau of Land Management land just outside the national park. It is possible to camp on these lands for a maximum period of 14 days. If you have a large RV, your options are limited. There is a parking area as soon as you turn onto the road which is suitable for vehicles over 25 feet. However, if you are smaller, there are side roads to access spectacular views, although they can be a little bumpy. The proximity to the national park is ideal for hiking and exploring, with excellent connectivity. We had a strong Verizon and T-Mobile signal and the city is only 15 minutes away.

Williams Fork Reservoir

Williams Fork Reservoir is located on Denver Water land and is an established free campsite with dedicated sites, picnic tables and on-site restrooms. There is even a free dump station available. Being on the lake was amazing, with gorgeous sunsets and easy access to towns 20-30 minutes away. Connectivity can be a bit difficult, but there are spots with better service on the other side of the lake.

Exploring Resources for Free Camping

Before we continue with our list, let's talk about how we find these free campsites. We use a variety of sites, resources and apps, but our favorites are Campendium, iOverlander, FreeCampsites.net and Ultimate Public Campgrounds. These tools help us find ideal spots in terms of cell signal, amenities and great views. By combining this different information, we manage to find the best place for us.

Turquoise Lake Campground

Turquoise Lake is our favorite free camp in Colorado so far. It is on a county road outside of the Turquoise Lake National Recreation Area. With magnificent views, plenty of pitch choices to suit all tastes, excellent connectivity and places to dispose of rubbish nearby, it's a great place for all types of campers. The town of Leadville is also nearby for amenities. However, make sure you follow the camping rules, don't leave trash, and be a good neighbor.

As we explored Colorado and camped for free, we discovered hidden gems and magnificent views. Use these resources to plan your own camping adventure in this beautiful state. Happy exploring!
