Description
Free dispersed camping on approximately 21 miles of primitive beach, from Portsmouth Village to Ophelia Inlet (Long Point area). Island accessible only by private vehicle ferry from Atlantic, N.C. (advance reservation required, fee based on vehicle size). Beach driving permit (ORV) required, approximately $35-75 US/year depending on the season, to be purchased on recreation.gov before arrival — camping itself is free, no separate camping permit required. Open from mid-March to December. No services on the island — everything must be taken back with you. Maximum stay of 14 consecutive days.
