Description
Elmwood Campground is a public and free campground, managed by the US Forest Service, located in the Francis Marion National Forest in South Carolina. It is shaded by large pines and oaks and serves as a starting point for hikers on the Palmetto Trail.
The site is about 45 minutes northeast of Charleston, accessible via Forest Road 158, a dirt forest road that can be difficult to navigate in wet weather. The sites are suitable for tents, camper vans, and small recreational vehicles, but not for large buses or trailers.
Camping does not require reservations and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. It offers 6 rustic sites with a picnic table and a fire ring. There are no potable water, electricity, or cell service available. Only one vault toilet is provided, and there is no trash service, so campers must pack out their waste.
The campground is located on the Swamp Fox Passage, a section of the Palmetto Trail, and it is important to wear bright orange clothing during hunting seasons. Due to the swampy environment, be sure to bring insect repellent. Leashed dogs are welcome. Please respect the area and nature by leaving no waste behind.
