BLM Campground in Fossil Falls

Summary of transcription content from: LivingOurDreamNow
Melody and I are at the Fossil Falls lava beds and are going to explore the hiking trail and free camping in the area. The trail leads to volcanic features and offers wonderful views of the falls and rock formations. We found glowing volcanic glass along the trail. We also visited a BLM-run paid campground nearby, which is great for small RVs but not recommended for large vehicles. We preferred to stay in the free camping area on the dry lake bed of Fossil Falls, which offered spacious sites and beautiful views of the mountains at sunset. We enjoyed the calm and nature while being autonomous with our solar panels and our water tank. We plan to continue our trip to Alabama Hills to explore other off-grid campsites. Camping BLM Fossil Falls

[Music] We're at the Fossil Falls lava beds. We see these rocks labeled everywhere. We're wilderness camping nearby. I'm going to take you to our wilderness campsite, but first, they have a hiking trail that leads to some volcanic features here at Fossil Falls. We're going to explore that hiking trail, and then I'll take you to our campsite. Melody and I are at the Fossil Falls Recreation Site. This is BLM land. We're at the trailhead here at the Fossil Falls Recreation Site. They have a campground right next to the trailhead. It's a paid campground, I'm sure it's very reasonable. I'm going to drive by on the way out. We're set up in a free camping area on BLM land, on the dry lake bed at Fossil Falls. Melody and I are already headed down the trail, let's see what's going on here. This is the trail that we just came down. We're set up less than a mile from the dry lake bed of Fossil Falls. You see this big cinder cone right there, it's kind of dark brown, we're set up right in front of this thing, but what I wanted to show you is there's volcanic glass everywhere and when you walk on it it glows, it's black but it glows when the sun hits it. This is the beginning of the falls. Oh yeah, you can see where the river doesn't flow through there anymore, but thousands of years ago there was a river here and it carved this gorge through the volcanic rock. I'm right at the edge of the gorge and you can see how rounded some of these rocks are. You see how the water carved this out. You see how round this rock is in there. I'm coming off this hiking trail, you have to make sure you have boots on, these rocks are pretty sharp. This is a much better view of the falls area, it's really something, how these holes see this hole, see this hole in there just a hole worn right through and it's thick, it's like, I mean, it's thick. I put my whole hand in there and these holes are everywhere, you kinda have to watch where you're walking. Yeah, I came from the other side where melody and Milo were exploring, you've got melody and Milo right there, but somebody built a charen right here, looks kinda spooky, check that out. Yeah, nice little rock here. Okay, let's go through the BLM paid campground real quick, I'll give you a rundown, and then we'll go to the Fossil Falls dry lake wilderness campground where I'm camping. Okay, we're back at the trailhead. Some important information for you, if you have an RV, you don't want to bring it to the trailhead, actually I think they have a sign that basically says that because there's no place to turn around with an RV around here. The campground, the paid BLM campground, loops around so that's where we're going now and then I'm going to show you our wilderness campsite. Okay, so I'm glad I stopped here, there's more information on these signs than I could find online. Fossil Falls Campground, Ridgecrest Field Office of the BLM, this is probably an affordable RV campground, six dollars a night, it looks like they have 11 sites, four of the campsites on the campground loop, campsites four, five, six, and eight are RV and trailer camping units. The other seven sites are not recommended for RVs. That's good to know. Let me show you some of these RV campgrounds. It's a self pay and the iron ranger is right on the right there. Hey guys, this is my first time going to one of these National Forest or BLM campgrounds. The hand pump actually works, you have to pump a little bit but the water flows. After you go past the self pay station you'll come to these pit toilets and the sign for loops A and B. It says loop B, no RVs allowed so we go to loop B. Okay so I'm glad I came back on that road from the paid BLM campground, believe it or not coming out to the free campground it's a better road than the one from the campground. You've got these sharp rocks, I mean they're everywhere, it was even worse back there. We're talking a small campground setup, if you're going to come here I wouldn't bring my fifth wheel back here. The BLM paid campground road, the loop, this is site number 4 where my truck is parked. Okay, you must have the sun behind you and so this is a much better view, this is campsite number four, again I would not bring my fifth wheel or any type of large vehicle here into the BLM campground at Fossil Falls. I take my exit from the BLM campground here at Fossil Falls and you know what's natural, I'm glad I didn't see those rocks on the bottom left of your screen, we have to go this way, it says exit actually I'm going to make a big turn but I would have been very disappointed if I had come here with my fifth wheel because your expectation is that the paid campground is going to be in much better shape than the free campground and it's not. This is site number five, this is where I came from where I came from and these are the rocks that you have to go over, this is the road people if you have a vehicle and you come over this you're going to hit these rocks. XNA on the campground if you have a big vehicle. If you have a small camper setup you have a high clearance all wheel drive no problem we have plenty of campsites to choose from there's even more campsites on the right I came out this way but I like to stay close to the main drag here but there's all kinds of different campsites. I'm going to turn left here and pull in front of my truck but it's a little soft in some places we have a all wheel drive so I'm not really worried about getting stuck or anything but it leaves a mark in the dry lake bed your tire and but let me show you around our campsite. Good boy Milo. Okay one more okay one more. One more okay okay one more okay one more. Okay let's get in the big red truck. Well the sun is setting right behind the mountain over there but my solar panels and you can see them if you look real close up on top of my truck you can see three of the four solar panels are on this side and I have one on the other side but I'm standing on the south side and so these solar panels are putting out about 24 amps putting 24 amps into my batteries this afternoon the batteries were full when I left and that was even running everything we had done I made a cup of coffee right before we left to show you fossil falls but there's all kinds of campsites here this lake kind of goes out like that so you've got plenty of choices. I'll show you our front porch here's where I sat this afternoon and it was just beautiful with that sun hitting the varied vegetation out there just now the golds and the greens were lighting up. You know I think I'm gonna sit down that's why we do wilderness camping that's why I got the truck equipped with solar so we can come and just enjoy nature. That's my kind of camping. We spent several months going down the Pacific Northwest, we've seen some amazing sites, a lot of places we've stayed, although I've checked out a lot of free camping opportunities, a lot of places we wanted to go, we stayed in an RV park, mostly a thousand tries but we're in wilderness camping mode now. When we leave here we will be heading up into the hills of Alabama, there are several campsites I want to explore there and we will be offline, using our 80 gallon fresh water tank and solar so I think I will stop the video there. I will have the download and upload speeds for Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile in the written video description on YouTube and I will also have the GPS coordinates for this free camping spot at the dry lake bed of Fossil Falls in the written video description. If you enjoy these videos please like and subscribe and I will see you on the road.
